The Most Spectacular Places to Cycle in the Dominican Republic

Shimon Brathwaite

The Dominican Republic is one of the few Caribbean countries with a landscape suitable for biking. Here you can find the highest mountain ranges in the Caribbean and miles of outback, making it one of the premier cycling destinations in the West Indies. While cycling, you can expect to see some of the greatest views the country has to offer.

Cordillera Central

The Dominican Republic is characterized by an abundance of mountains; it contains the highest mountain ranges of any Caribbean country. Cordillera Central is a mountain range found in western Dominican Republic, just west of the capital Santo Domingo. Duarte Peak rises to 10,417 feet and is the highest peak in the entire West Indies. There are many other great attractions and activities to enjoy in the area in addition to cycling, such as hiking, water sports, outdoor sports, many waterfalls and great night life in Bonao.

Higuero Enchanted House

Higuero Enchanted House is a 24km, looping intermediate-level single track. The trail, which has some technical components and a few small hills, makes it a good course for intermediate and more skilled cyclists. It is located in the country’s capital, Santo Domingo, and is another great outdoor experience.

Iguana Mama

Iguana Mama has seven different cycling excursions, with varying levels of difficulty, perfect for cyclists of all skill levels and interests. Iguana Mama consists of many off-road tracks and gives cyclists a great introduction to Dominican culture, geography and ecology. There are restaurants nearby where you can find breakfast, lunch and dinner in between your activities.

Constanza to San Jose de Ocoa (85km)

This is perhaps the most difficult route the country has to offer, but don’t let this discourage you because it’s also one of the most rewarding cycling experiences you will find. This course takes on average about two days. This is no place to get food or water while on the route, and you will pass no other people except at the army barracks in Valle Nuevo, which is approximately at the halfway mark.

In return for enduring these hardships, you will get to see some of the most breathtaking views the country has to offer. If you are attempting this journey, please know that it can be very cold at night in Valle Nuevo, so you will need to pack warm clothes.
